Augustine draws on the rhetoric classica. Per lui l'Amore è rivolto sia al bene che al male. Esso può essere visto in due modi: come Caritas, Dilectio cioè come amore ordinato, rivolto a Dio; oppure come Cupiditas, Libido cioè come amore malvagio. Sant'Agostino trasforma l'espressione "Deus Caritas est" in "Deus Dilectio est". La Caritas per lui non è possesso, ma donazione, sacrificio. Il Verbo è il mediatore che si fa carne per redimere gli uomini.
L'Agape è il desiderio legato alla crezione divina. Noi desideriamo riposarci in Dio.
L'idea della bellezza è l'unica cosa che fa innamorare. In St. Augustine it is the love of God but ugliness is sin. We love because God loved us first. Caritas Beauty is in contrast to the greek world that saw it as Eros.
We can love the creatures created by God, but first we must love God more than anything else. This concept revolves around two verbs: fruor and OMPETENT. Fruor, enjoy, and turned to God OMPETENT, use, turn to the creatures. You must use the creatures, not to take advantage of them.
